October 22, 2014 - The Connecting Business and Education Committee hosted their first Advanced Manufacturing Career Fair Wednesday, October 22nd at Southeastern Community College’s West Burlington Campus. The committee, comprised of members from Lee County EDG, Greater Burlington Partnership, Mt. Pleasant Chamber Alliance, Great Prairie Area Education Agency, Iowa Workforce, and Southeastern Community College, connects the workplace and the class room throughout the Southeast Iowa Region.
This free event is targeted toward students in 6th - 12th grades and their parents; in addition to adults who might be considering the manufacturing field. The 17 different exhibitors varied from Roquette America to Axalta Coating System. Allowing students to learn more about the variety of fields they are able to pursue in Advanced Manufacturing. Providing the chance to see what happens in the workplace and get excited about the variety of Advanced Manufacturing careers in the area.
Southeastern Community College also had exhibits featuring their Drafting and Advanced Manufacturing training opportunities, giving students an idea of the training necessary for the variety of careers in the field. Over 70 students and their parents attended the Career Fair, participating in hands on activities and asking local manufacturers questions on how to prepare for life after graduation.
