Cryotech Deicing Technology Achieves Milestones
Increasing Safety and Environmental Protection
Located in Lee County, Cryotech Deicing Technology, is a world leader in aircraft, runway and commercial deicing technology. Cryotech manufacturers and markets environmentally friendly, low corrosion acetate based commercial and runway deicers.
In addition to commercial and runway applications, Cryotech is a major supplier of glycol based aircraft deicing fluids. If you have ever been on a flight being deiced, there’s a good chance the fluid being sprayed on the wing was developed here in Fort Madison.
Cryotech focuses on environmental impact, in both their manufacturing processes and the effects of their products. Each process and product is developed with the environment in mind. Over the last 25 years, Cryotech has launched several environmentally preferred formulas in the commercial, runway, and aircraft deicing industries.
In 1992, Cryotech introduced calcium magnesium acetate (CMA®) and sodium acetate (NAAC®) to the North American market. Acetates are considered safe for the environment because they readily biodegrade and exhibit low toxicity to vegetation and aquatic life. In 2006, Cryotech developed BX36®, a bio-based liquid runway deicer. The new formula significantly reduced catalytic oxidation of carbon brakes, corrosion of cadmium plated parts, and electrical conductivity.
A recent press release issued by FedEx, details how Iowa-based Cryotech Deicing Technology, who supplies FedEx with deicing fluid at approximately 100 domestic airports, rose to the challenge of developing a more environmentally friendly product. Cryotech’s chemists and technicians developed Polar Plus® LT Type I Deicing/Anti-icing Fluid, which is significantly less harmful to aquatic ecosystems.
Cryotech is an ISO 14001 and 9001 certified company. ISO standards assure customers that Cryotech
activities are appropriately managed and controlled. ISO 14001 is primarily concerned with environmental management, while ISO 9001 focuses on quality management systems.
In 2016, Cryotech achieved certification to both the 14001:2015 and 9001:2015 revised standards, making it among the top 10% of companies certified to the revised standards.
“Cryotech prides itself on being an industry leader focused on innovation and continual improvement,”
explained Craig Starwalt, President and CEO of Cryotech Deicing Technology, “Obtaining certification to the latest ISO revisions, to ensure our internal procedures match this effort, was a natural step. I believe utilizing these proven management systems standards will enhance our business and allow us to better serve our customers.”
2017 marks Cryotech’s 25th anniversary. As part of a year-long celebration Cryotech, and its employees, will focus on the environment this spring by participating in a number of activities, including river bank clean up near the Cryotech complex and planting of trees on property. A fitting endeavor for a company dedicated to environmental stewardship.
