Diverse background of education levels and academic areas of emphasis. Over two-thirds, 71.1% of workforce is educated beyond high school.

  • Businesses have the ability to take advantage of a variety of educational resources including professional development programs, associate degree options and access to bachelor degree programs from five local college and university resources.

Large labor pool - Local workforce is willing to commute average of 25 miles one way for the right opportunity.

To assist with this Lee County EDG has developed Grow Lee, an overreaching program that assists in the development of the local workforce starting at the elementary school level and going all the way through experienced workers. View a list of the programs by clicking the logo below.


Grow Lee Quick Facts:

  • Winner of the Professional Developers of Iowa's Best Business Retention & Expansion Program for two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017.
  • Develops a pipeline of workers for new and existing industries
  • Has reached over 1,760 Lee County students, preparing them for careers in Southeast Iowa 
  • Launched 12 Plus and Manufacturing 101 program, a basic employability class for entry level employees, partnering with 15 local manufacturers to develop curriculum
  • Provided scholarships for 90 Lee County students to attend week-long camps focusing on STEM careers, increasing Lee County's participation by 229%
  • Initiated Externship opportunities for 7 local educators to spend 6 weeks in a manufacturing facility to learn about real world skills needed in 21 Century careers
