STEM Festival 2014
April 26, 2014 - Enthusiastic interaction and intense concentration were evident on most of the faces of those who attended the Southeast Iowa STEM Festival Saturday, April 26th on the West Burlington Campus of Southeastern Community College.
To encourage local students to get more involved in STEM subjects and careers, Lee County EDG helped sponsor and organize the Southeast IA STEM Festival. The event was a huge success with 40 exhibitors, over 50 volunteers and over 800 excited students and parents.
Organized like a carnival, students and their families went from exhibit to exhibit exploring the many career opportunities and demonstrations dedicated to different aspects of science and technology.
The steady stream of excited students and parents kept exhibitors busy throughout the day. Chase Hennigar, Production Manager at DuPont, “I was very impressed with the coordination and turnout this Saturday.” Mr. Hennigar demonstrated the importance of chemical composition by having students create bouncy balls and fake snot. Both activities required the same ingredients however by changing the amounts students made different products.
Students were able to see all of the exciting opportunities in STEM through hands-on exhibits such as 3D printing, dry ice bubbles, robotics, MIG welding simulators, manufacturing simulations and much, much more!
